3 Ways Yoga Helps Anxiety

December 5, 2019

Anxiety can be overwhelming. At first, your palms are sweating. Then your mind is racing 1,000,000 miles a minute. And, you feel helpless, like you could even break down crying and or screaming. Anxiety is a feeling that needs a safe place to go. And, it’s often a protective mechanism when you feel scared or hurt.

Dealing with anxiety in a healthy way is key to success in your life, and Yoga is an easy way to release your anxious feelings and call in new, healthy emotions that are in alignment with your best self. Here are 3 ways yoga helps alleviate your anxiety.

#1: Yoga can greatly help with anxiety because it helps you learn to let go of this feeling. Just like you breathe in and you breathe out, you let go of one breath to start the next one. In order to have a new feeling come in, you have to let go of the one you had before. So, by using yoga, you can learn to let go of your anxiety and remember it is just a part of you, not all of you.

#2: Yoga increases flexibility in your body and flexible thinking in your mind. It helps you gain flexibility and overcome anxiety. If you sit in a chair all day, you may be in pain, and anxious about your body. So, yoga can help you open your spine and your hips. If your lower back is tight, yoga can help you improve circulation after a long day. If your neck is tight, the stress can make your mind tight and make you more annoyed, anxious, and irritated. Yoga also improves flexibility in your mind allowing you to be less rigid, less anxious, and think outside of the box. When you move your body in new poses and new shapes, your mind will gain a new perspective rather than being stuck on anxiety. Don’t worry or stress about what you can’t change. You’ll realize there’s no reason you need anxiety, because the universe has a divine plan for your life!

#3: Yoga teaches you how to breathe more deeply. When you have anxiety, you’re taking shallow, hyperventilating, very small, breaths. And, the short, small breaths actually create more anxiety because your brain doesn’t get oxygen. So, yoga allows you to breathe and feel relaxation in every part of your being. Your mind, body, and spirit feel safe, rejuvenated, and become connected to each other through guided breathing. By learning yoga breathing skills, you’re creating a place of inner peace and inner wisdom no matter what happens in your life.
